Happy new year, everyone. Good health and good tiddings to all.

It's been a strange 2016, with somewhat unbelieveable developments in politics and with rather more celebrity deaths than expected. We'll need all our strength for 2017, since the trend will probably continue.

The first newspaper article I read in the new year described December, not April, as the cruellest month, but frighteningly and bewilderingly alluded to Chaucer, which was... new. (Well, it is the new year.)

Also, schadenfreude all the way.

(Also, who does that? Doesn't it take about 2 seconds to google-check? WTF.)

For Yuletide, I wrote Roosting Winds, Nirvana in Fire, for Naphyla. It's mostly hints and a couple of scene settings, because I couldn't really find a way of writing about a Jingyan-Mei Changsu reunion without it being OCC-ly gushy and melodramatic.

I did read quite a few Vorkosigan fics:

The Huntsman's Reel, Alys Vorpatil, Simon Illyan, by Philomytha

Odd Men Out, Mark, Dono by keerawa

Peace and Quiet, Ivan, Gregor, by alessandriana

Troublesome to Others, but a Torment to Themselves, Mark, Miles, Kareen by ozymandias314

Also my brain has been consumed by k-dramas these past two weeks. Whoa.

Read Kings Rising by [livejournal.com profile] freece aka C.S. Pacat. I was annoyed that it'd been 2 Feb here for hours and I had to wait on Amazon's timezone for it, but then it downloaded and I was happy. Repeats to self: Laurent is the blond one; Damien, no, Damon, no, Damen is the dark-haired one. Blondie is from Vere, Damen is from Akielos. Yup, gotcha.

I'd read a few chapters of Captive Prince back when it was still on LJ, and liked it... sort of. The story was interesting, though slavefic isn't really my kink, but it was fun to read. Only I kept mixing up the two main characters. Not due to any fault in the characterisations, but due to my facility for confusing d/l/m/r sounds. Dalen, Daren, Ramen, Laumen, Lauden... it was frustrating. With constant reminders to self (see above), though, I worked though that, and got three books' worth of entertainment. spoilery? More opinions than about plot )

So, I've been writing and posting a WIP called Off Trajectory over at 31_days, a Viewfinder/Crazy Tokyo Paradise crossover where I work out my headcanon of Tsukasa and Ryuji. I'm afraid that to-date, it's full of Takaba trying to figure things out and Asami being his usual bastardy, not-so-mysterious self. It's not high on action and what little reference to sex is all fade-to-black. I'm kind of excited about writing again, though.

RL: Have been at new job for a bit more than a month now. Not as bewildering now, though still many things to learn/re-learn/un-learn, trying to inculcate new work habits (time costs are a thing...) and quite a bit of internal eye-rolling at clients. Long hours but that's the price of being in a new job...

Reading

1) (if it can be called reading...) Barbara Walker's Third Treasury of Knitting Patterns

2) The Vorrh by B. Catling, which has interesting images and little stories, occasionally feels like it's exoticising indigeneous people but overall not bad.

3) Barbara Mertz's Red Land, Black Land on "daily life in ancient Egypt", as the cover says. Chatty tone.

USA trip

issenllo: rabbit hairstick (rabbit hairstick)
So, I went to California with my dad. Not necessarily as a holiday, though there were holiday-like bits. My dad's old friend had emigrated some 30 years ago and they hadn't seen each other in 20. I was the designated caretaker who got to accompany dad on a reunion trip.

We touched down at San Francisco, was picked up by dad's friend who lived an hour (or so) away, and spent most of our time in the countryside (do you call it countryside, USA'ians?), only venturing outwards for a few days through a bus trip to Yosemite, Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon, very touristy. Notes:

1. Huge country, many, many cars. Mind-boggling to think of people zipping up and down roads for hours and hours each day in cars.

2. Why is your water not drinkable? From the tap, that is? I'd have expected that from a country like China but...

3. I've spent far more time at McDonald's whilst in the USA than I have ever done so in a year, in my own country. Because (a) hot water, and (b)familar food - ahhh, Americanisation - for my father's notoriously fussy palate, without which he'd rather starve. Strangely, he did not take to the Chinese food in California.

4. Las Vegas: big, impressive and very amusing. Do people really buy into that psychosis about whatever happening in Las Vegas staying in Las Vegas? That would explain the pyramid...

5. Saw the Golden Gate Bridge and went on a whale-watching tour (but not on the same day). My dad's friend was disappointed that the whales didn't swim up to us and leap into the air.

6. The insistence on outlet shopping. No, I do not even like shopping that much, especially not with two retired men trailing after me trying to persuade me to buy a handbag.

And we returned home jetlagged and nursing coughs and colds. I think recovery will take a while yet.

Work continues to be time-consuming, a balancing act of pure labour and brainwork... and forcing self to pay attention to even what I assume are done stuff - I think my new motto is "What if I'm the only one checking this letter?" (Have encountered, and committed many typos this week. *sigh*)

Employees now have remote access to the office system. Now we can work from home! (Yeah, as you might have guessed, I'm sooo thrilled.)

Thankfully missed all the fuss about Valentine's Day - I get irritated by the implication that it is the MOST important day of the year; what about the other 364?

1) I got my RT Surface finally! It's adorable; can't say more about the useability until I've finished setting it up, but I can tell you one thing I adore already: that kickstand. It's a little mechanical hinge: it's like a little bit of steampunk.

2) From f-list: Oscar Wilde and Walt Whitman did it.

3) In my headcanon, Tsukasa and Ryuji (of Tokyo Crazy Paradise) got married and had twin sons, one of whom, after unspecified backstory + family secret + yakuza drama/trauma, runs aways from home and eventually becomes Asami Ryuichi (of Viewfinder). Of course, this is possible only by mashing up the timelines like whoa and moving the Kuryugumi headquarters to, say, Osaka. But I have a fantasy of Tsukasa coming to Tokyo to take her son (the other one's being trained as Ryuji's successor) in hand. By kicking everyone in the head.

Have heard of this but never read it until last night: The Fourth Cetaganda War, Ivan Vorpatril, Vorkosigan, AU after Diplomatic Immunity, by Glishara. There's loads of canon character death, so please read the author's notes. Part 1 is completed but part 2 is WIP, and hasn't been updated since 2011.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 trailer. Looking forward to the movie, which comes out next June. I am so amused at how the majority of comments are about Hiccup's hawtness. I am more curious about those flying fish/dragon-y creatures in the ocean. Does this mean you have dragons that 'fly' underwater (like penguins!), because that would be fascinating. I mean, I don't know if I should read the books - does it talk about whether this universe is one where there are way more reptile-ly creatures than in ours?
