year-end quiz

Stole it from my f-list: the end of year quiz

1. What did you do in 2018 that you'd never done before?
Travelled to Vietnam. Became a homeowner. Decided on my own floor tiles.

2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Didn't make New Year's resolutions last year and would probably not make any for next year either. I have plans and intentions, those will have to do.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No. Though a cousin got married so in typical Chinese fashion, we're waiting.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.

5. What countries did you visit?
Vietnam.

6. What would you like to have in 2019 that you lacked in 2018?
The leisure to pursue my hobbies. This year I was all preoccupied with my new apartment, even though I collected the keys in the last quarter and only moved in a few days ago. Coming to a realisation of the best way to manage my time.

Time for friends, whom I've woefully neglected.

And if finances permit, more travel.

7. What date from 2018 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
6 November: managed to coax my dad into taking exercise; 30 October: key collection; 6 June: first sight of Sapa.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Paying for my new place; and budgeting enough to afford the basics plus a little bit more.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not being there enough for my parents after moving out. I know, I wanted to move out, but.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Just the flu and cough.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Other than #8? A Pilot capless fountain pen. I use it every day. It writes beautifully.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Hm...

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Too many to name.

14. Where did most of your money go?
See #8. Fountain pen. Books.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
My own apartment!

16. What song will always remind you of 2018?
The entire soundtrack for Are You Human Too? (AYHT) (K-drama)

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
happier or sadder? yes
thinner or fatter? Fatter. But I think healthier.
richer or poorer? poorer. But almost entirely debt-free.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Bought more books... Insisted on spending more time with parents. Gone to more concerts.

Did more writing. And reading, definitely reading.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Being bad-tempered and overall grumpy with family over stuff that in retrospect, seems pretty minor.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
Unpacking, haha.

21. How will you be spending New Year's Eve?
Some work to do, then tidying up after the unpacking. Maybe I'll go buy a bed. (I bought one earlier, but due to issues, it was returned.)

22. Did you fall in love in 2018?
Intermittently, for about 5 minutes. Luckily he turned out to be a cad.

23. How many one-night stands?
n/a

24. What was your favourite TV program?
None. Dramas: AYHT, Story of Yanxi Palace.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
It's a growing list. The names eventually flow to another list: People I wish stepped in dog poo all the time.

26. What was the best book you read?
The Silence of the Girls, by Pat Barker. I should add that I didn't read a lot this year. Also The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, a re-read.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
It's possible to play <<涼涼>> on the guzheng and I want to do it as soon as I move my guzheng in.

28. What did you want and get?
See #8.

29. What did you want and not get?
A robot vacuum cleaner. I admit, I was influenced by AYHT, so I decided to hold back for now. But I really do not enjoy vacuuming. Also a sewing machine. I haven't sewn in years (due to lack of s.m., of course) so want to wait before any further major purchase. I actually wanted to buy this white refrigerator I saw on sale but alas, it was too big (and too pricey).

30. What was your favourite film of this year?
I can't really remember what films I watched this year. The most recent was Into the Spider-verse which I do rec except for the psychedelic sequences.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was one year older than last year. We had cake!

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Moving out without feeling guilty.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2018?
Dresses.

34. What kept you sane?
Dreams of #8.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
n/a

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Not politic to say.

37. Who did you miss?
The kids I taught last year. Just on and off, wondering how they are.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
New colleague! We had four new colleagues, actually, but one of them feels like could be a really interesting friend. We're from the same uni (not that it actually matters in the overall scale of things, but it was a good starting point), are both pretty cynical - well, our cynical natures are on similar wavelengths, anyway.

39. Did you meet anyone you only knew online?
Nope.

40. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2018:
You wanted to move out, so you better take active steps to make it happen, including making your own mistakes, instead of appealing to the people around you to make decisions for you. For 'you' read 'I'.

Always trust your instincts.
