More novel thoughts
A few more takeaways
1. So basically the first indication of Tang Yi/Meng Shao Fei pairing is when they were attacked and MSF was cut on the shoulder, and TY was so angry that he couldn't stop beating the culprit up, so much so that MSF quickly pulled him away into the woods, for fear that he'd accidentally kill him. Not at all a healthy way to deal with your anger and fear, but... bless the boy, he does work out his feelings eventually.
2. After Jack goes home with ZZ the second time, i.e. the first time he tells ZZ that he's attracted to ZZ, he ended up kissing ZZ senseless in bed before going downstairs to cook him a good meal. Far more plot progression than I was expecting. We assume ZZ was totally okay with that.
3. When TY was beating up MSF's shooter (after he got shot protecting Zuo Hong Ye), Jack's nearby, reflecting on ways to make it through torture... from prior experience as both torturer and torturee. Dark, Jack, dark.
4. After MSF was shot the first time, TY starts carrying the skeleton keychain around. I guess it's visually more memorable in the drama to hang it at his table.
5. Jack's Chinese name, Fang Liang Dian, cracks me up, because it's a homophone for the expression "make it brighter". Heh. Maybe that's why Jack is the sole person* who keeps being referred to as "man with bright red hair".
*Though ZZ gets a lot of "the cute policeman", etc.
6. After MSF celebrates TY's birthday and they kiss for a while, TY realises they shouldn't go any further yet due to MSF's injury and queries MSF on when his stitches will be removed, and tells MSF that, at that point, he'd better not run. MSF: "Um." (acknowledgement and agreement). I find that so adorable. I love frankness in a relationship.

Oh, nice, I like dark Jack. There are a few ficlets with dark Jack on tumblr, but it will be cool to read about it in the novel.
And thank you again for all your thoughts, they're very interesting to read. :)

Re dark Jack, I've read a few of those fics too, a lot hinting at how he was a trained killer, etc, and those viewpoints are interesting. The more extreme set-ups, though, feel unnecessarily dramatic, like creating (Jack's) trauma for exaggeration. From Jack's own surprise at Zhao Zi's character, it feels more like he's been immersed in a very different world previously - he more transactional than damaged? Just my own take.
Besides, it's totally possible to be hardened by your past, even coarsened by life, without war and torture, just because life sucks and you can't catch a break. Even ZZ had a sucky life: he's got no parents, and then grandma died. The surprising thing about ZZ is that he still seems so naive. Whereas Jack is all typical, world-weary "Yeah I'm dark like whoa". I find Jack less interesting in that respect, though it's great for fic!

And yes, Zhao Zi's past is hard in that realistic way with dead parents and losing his grandma. I found it really sweet that he manged to retain his optimism and naivete despite that.
