writing meme and others
Meme! Though a bit irrelevant, seeing as I haven't written much fic for years.
Make a list of:
Ten things that you think are common in your fic:
1. Talking heads. I wish I were more able to describe the setting, the characters' appearance, and the way they behave. But when I start writing, the parts that comes out most naturally is... people talking.
2. Mis-use of honorifics. In the cases of fics with characters that require them, I've usually just gone with a quick guess of what is appropriate. Probably I didn't mess up in too OCC a manner, but I'm pretty sure there are some whoopers to people who actually know.
3. May 5 angst, specifically for Hikago fics, for Hikaru. It's become sort of cliched, but I seem unable to stop. Although I do think it's not totally implausible (which is why I continue to commit it) and because Sai angst is so convenient as a way to explore Hikaru's character.
4. Some sort of mystery involving gobans, again for Hikago fics.
5. Characters over-rationalise. For some reason, they just keep trying to explain or apologise for things that may or may not be their business or their fault.
6. Attempts at plotting and mystery. I really, really want plots, though I don't always succeed at executing them.
7. Humour that is only comprehensible to one or two of the characters (and me).
8. Crossovers. I do like crossovers a lot. ^__^
9. Crabby old men. Or perhaps it was only Kuwabara (Hikago).
10. Characters being self-aware of the fucked-up-ness of modern Japan (the terrible economy, the misogyny among certain groups, homophobia, xenophobia, pervasive drinking culture, just to name a few) where, realistically speaking, they would only be at most vaguely aware of such issues.
Ten things you think are uncommon in your fic although commonly found in fic in general:
1. Women. I'm embarrassed that I don't really end up writing female characters because I'm too busy exploring Sai angst, or May 5 angst, or a mystery involving gobans. And that I'm unable to rid myself of the tendency to write every woman like me.
2. Pairing-based fic. Romance-based fics. Those fics where one person works through his issues and realise he is in love with the this other person. Repeat. Rinse.
3. Sex scenes. I try, a bit, but it's not really something I want to dwell on, and I just prefer fade-to-black scenes.
4. Action scenes. I ungrudgingly admire writers who can do this coherently - and entertainingly, because when I try the characters behave like robots whose joints need oiling.
5. People behaving badly. I sound like a prig, don't I? I don't enjoy reading about characters that are purposefully malicious or spiteful or cruel (though I put up with it for the hurt/comfort fics) and I don't want to write such behaviour at all. Obviously I do, for plot reasons, but I minimise those scenes a lot.
6. Vampire/zombie/apocalyptic scenarios.
7. Any sort of Spin the Bottle/Truth or Dare scenes, especially in which certain romantic confessions or sudden!attraction tropes occur.
8. Related to 2, fics where everyone pairs up. Not everyone has to pair up, I feel, though I admit it's tidy and sometimes, really cute.
9. Good sentences.
10. Freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors in Japanese high schools. All right, this goes more towards the fanficrant-type of comment. Perhaps to some writers, this is a handy way of designating who is a first-year and who is about to leave school. I certainly understand what they mean. But.
Ten things you wish were more true of your fic (just ten?):
1. More female characters.
2. More coherent plot leading to more complete storytelling.
3. Good sentences.
4. Length.
5. Interesting, engaging descriptions of characters that go beyond "he wore a T-shirt, black jeans and on his head, the remains of an upended goke".
6. Where a sex scene is indeed necessary or would be illuminating towards plot and characterisation, it would not fade to black.
7. No typos.
8. Better descriptions of the setting.
9. The ability to tackle sensitive issues without seeming to moralise and without the plot being derailed or characters suddenly becoming activists.
10. I sound like I actually know what I'm talking about. -_-;

I finally found it! MV of 张学友's 《不想这是场戏》 a search complicated by the fact that I couldn't even figure out how to romanise Cantonese, and didn't remember the exact title, and Jacky Cheung has too many songs and MVs. Resolution isn't that great, but yay anyway. What I really love about this is that the male character (Cheung himself, as presumably himself the famous singer) and the female character do not end up together. They had a few moments of chemistry while practising their dance, and that was it. The end was lovely.
And goodness, does Jacky Cheung look so young, or is it just me?
