I can't remember if I did something like this last year, but well, a lot has happened this year. I got older, slightly more bitter but also calmer about stuff. So-

1. What did you do in 2014 that you'd never done before?
Bar exams, and many other things that escaped my mind.

2. Did you keep your New Year resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I can't remember my New Year resolutions and probably won't make new ones for the next year. Unless it's the one to exercise more, in which case I've already started.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope, but a couple of friends will do so early next year, so good health to all and my wishes that everything goes well.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
My grandfather died in February. We were expecting it for a while because he'd been getting very frail, but still. He was not necessarily an easy man to deal with when he was younger, and my mother has a lot of bitter memories connected with that. From my privileged viewpoint I feel it regretful that some part of my mother, despite her best effects, still feels resentful of him. Your parents do fuck you up, sometimes.

5. What countries did you visit?
Nooooone. I am bitter about this, so much.

6. What would you like to have in 2015 that you lacked in 2014?
A job. Well, my boss has agreed to take me on, but it won't be for months yet, and anything can happen before that! *anxious*

7. What date from 2014 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
The date that my grandpa died. Unfortunately, it's no good remembering the date on the Gregorian calendar because grandpa's anniversary will undoubtedly be dated using the lunar calendar so actually I should look up the lunar calendar date instead.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting through pupilship. I'm also bitter that this was my biggest achievement. I could have been doing something less stressful and more fun-filled.

9. What was your biggest failure?
It's not the biggest, but most acute: making a clerical mistake on one of the files I was helping my boss on, and it was one of those mistakes that come back to haunt you.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nope. Unless you count nearsightedness.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Wooden hairsticks from taobao.com, especially the green sandalwood ones.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
My cousin D, who obtained her Bachelor degree after lots of diligence!

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Not exactly depressed, but an old friend SK, who did a number of things with money that I considered foolhardy and foolish and damn, it took a month of Sundays of persuasion (and nagging) from me (and a couple of other people) before he rectified it. And then he was happy and relieved. And I'm so... grrr, you could have done that before! Though I did get the chance to say "I told you so" a dozen times. I am not gracious in victory.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Bar exam preparatory course (compulsory). So, so bitter about this. Though if I end up failing my bar exams (touch wood) I will look like a clown.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
How to Train Your Dragon 2! I have the DVD too!

16. What song will always remind you of 2014?
None.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
happier or sadder?
It's all relative, isn't it? Tiny bit happier, tiny bit sadder.

thinner or fatter? Fatter.
richer or poorer? Definitely poorer.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
- Spent more time with my grandpa. Took more photos with him.
- Did more revision...
- Watched HTTYD 2 one more time, the 3D version (I usually don't catch 3D versions because it gives me a headache).
- More swimming.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
- Lazing around doing nothing.
- Sniping at my mum.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
- I spent Christmas watching Doctor X, season 3. It was fun. Again, I have to say that Japan's corporate culture is like something out of a horror show.

21. How will you be spending New Year's Eve?
Haven't the faintest. Probably TV.

22. Did you fall in love in 2014?
I don't know.

23. How many one-night stands?
Zero.

24. What was your favourite TV program?
I watched Master's Sun recently and it was awesome. *shrugs*

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
YES. YESSS! A self-entitled little shit who is a pimple on the face of humanity.

26. What was the best book you read?
The next one.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The HTTYD soundtrack. (I know.)

28. What did you want and get?
I wanted Isiah Berlin's Crooked Timber of Humanity and I got it for myself. Ditto for the Httyd 2 dvd.

29. What did you want and not get?
Too many things. More salary. More free time. Sensible clients. Co-worker who is not a blight on humanity. More showings of Httyd 2. Also Httyd 3.

30. What was your favourite film of this year?
I'm going to pretend you didn't just ask that.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I ate cake.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Just one?

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2014?
How did I manage to wear out yet another pair of shoes?

34. What kept you sane?
But I'm not.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
None.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
I could say Occupy Central, but in reality the Ebola epidemic.

37. Who did you miss?
Grandpa. And SJ, who went back to Korea after graduation.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
My newest student, who is awesome and whom I was (ashamedly) surprised to find that he actually spoke English pretty well and had learnt it all himself without going to any language school.

39. Did you meet anyone you only knew online?
Yup! [personal profile] troisroyaumes and S visited Singapore and I met them for dinner (together with several other LJ/Dreamwidth/fandom people whose names have now slipped my mind, because my memory is terrible - I'm really sorry!). It was fun but kind of surreal.

40. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2014:
Don't sweat the small stuff. But check the small stuff before you chuck.

41. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
None that I can think of.
