Caught in a Thousand Strings, Hikago, AU, WIP, by Thai_Tea_Addict. I'm over the moon at finding good, long fics, especially when it's Hikago. It's WIP, but at over 200,000 words, there's enough for a satisfying read, with the anticipation of more to come. Please heed the warnings for child prostitution. It's a definite AU but the characters are strongly drawn, and as distinctive as in canon. I was struck by how likeable Ogata is - in canon I didn't care for him much, but here he's somehow more compelling. Sai is impressive, and Hikaru... oh, Hikaru.

Yuletide reveals:

Much thanks to psiten, who wrote Midnight Song, Seishiro/Subaru, Tokyo Babylon/X. It's a lovely fic and I'm delighted!

Mentioned below, but worth mentioning again: Magnet and Steel, Tokyo Crazy Paradise, which was by [personal profile] tielan. I love your TCP fics, and thank you again. ^____^

I wrote A Gentleman's Venture, a Sorcerer to the Crown fic, which started off okay, but I didn't give a longer follow-up, for which I feel apologetic. I definitely need more of the universe before I can write more.

Ended up watching the Star Wars movie after all, which wasn't as much about The Force Awakening as in What the heck has the Force been doing, exactly? (Actually, should have gone in for Ip Man 3.) But eh, it was a corporate thing with free tickets. spoilery )

Decagram series, Seishirou/Subaru, Tokyo Babylon, X/1999 by AKK. It's been a long while since I've read a really satisfying TB/X future fic, a category which often by necessity is also an AU.

On the RL front, general fucked-up-ness in being retrenched last month, a time which is generally an awfuler time to be jobless than most other times (not that it's ever good), as organisations don't tend to hire in November/December and many of one's obligations - especially those that require money - are called in. Not best pleased with ex-boss.

Upsides, such as they are: Time to: write; recover from this stupid cold; stash-busting by starting a sweater; visiting newly opened art gallery in town. Just finished a temping stint for a non-profit, stuffing envelopes. Job-hunting too, though I don't expect much in the way of results - but best to get into the habit.

Nonetheless, occasionally (and comfortingly) one does find instances that the universe is not as fucked-up as one assumed: Oscar Pistorius guilty of murdering Reeva Steenkamp

Finished reading 瑯琊榜 Nirvana in Fire, novel version. It hews very closely to the TV series, so it was like watching the series again. Discovered today to my amusement that an old friend has watched it three times, before I could pimp it. Heheh. For amusement's sake: Nirvana in Fire now re-cast as the Count of Monte Cristo.

Random thoughts.

ONE. I saw a Subaru (vehicle) on the way to work, and my thoughts went to another Subaru, aka Tokyo Babylon. How old would Subaru be by now? Lessee, he was a young adult at X/1999, so 16 years on to now, 2015, he's probably in his mid to late 30s. Poor guy, I hope he isn't still hung up on Seishirou. It was a doomed romance from the start. There're still good years ahead, maybe with someone who's genuinely cheerful all the time. Like... Naruto! And now I want to write a fic where Subaru meets Naruto and have a cheerful affair.

TWO. Sat in on an interview during the week and I felt so bad for the candidate but... unless you have a physical condition that prevents you from doing so, SIT UP when you're at an interview. Sit up straight, even. You should not be hunched over your bag (which by the way, should be on the floor or maybe another chair but not your lap) and also, stop mumbling.

THREE. Damn this stupid haze. My eyes keep tearing up.

RL: Have been at new job for a bit more than a month now. Not as bewildering now, though still many things to learn/re-learn/un-learn, trying to inculcate new work habits (time costs are a thing...) and quite a bit of internal eye-rolling at clients. Long hours but that's the price of being in a new job...

Book:

Death Comes to Pemberly, PD James. Not bad, has quite the flavour of Austen in some parts, with nice moments of sarcasm (though not irony), sprinkled liberally with cynicism. The exposition on Charlotte was delicious, if a little deadening. To the modern sensibility weaned on scenes of gory violence, Dary's squeamishness regarding dead bodies deserved an eye-roll. Plot was okay; the red herring was so obvious as to verge on being neon-coloured, the resolution was very deux ex machina and James' way of dealing with Wickam was a cop-out, frankly. I wished Elizabeth had more of a role in the investigation, but perhaps that would have made the novel more cosy-like, which is not probably what James wanted. I enjoyed, fangirl-like, the little bits that connected with the other Austen novels, such as Persuasion and (wee!) Emma.

Had some time and crossposted some of my old fics to AO3 account.

I also added a new fic I wrote for the most recent round of Blind_Go, Attention to Go Players, which had a genderswap theme.

I hadn't done Blind_Go in ages, and I was about to give this round a pass too, only I went to bed thinking "ok, which genderswapped character would I like to write about?" and woke up with "!!!" Fairytale and Clockwork Hearts, (Tales of the Bots series), probably wouldn't make sense to people who haven't read the other fics in the series), WIP, Dummy, Steve/Tony, Avengers, by scifigrl47

[livejournal.com profile] ursulav launches Toad Words, her collection of fairytale re-tellings, in e-book fashion, under the name T. Kingfisher. (Hm, why did I keep typing Toad Woads?) I've read all but the new story before, of course, but it's nice to have them in one place instead of hunting them down, though it did take USD3.99 (or whatever is your local currency equivalent). Price's within the acceptable range for me. The new story, Boar & Apples, is an interesting take on the tale, but the plot was not as unexpected as I was hoping for (though the boar who is also an architect is awesome). Felt a little depressing here and there; I'm happier with the other tales.

Personal updates:

1) I finished the mandatory training period last week and (other than catching up on sleep and desk-clearing) I'm a bit at loose ends. At some point I should really go back and hit the books in preparation for the course leading up to the bar exams, which starts in (the course, that is), oh, two more weeks - but right now I'm enjoying the break and pretending I know nothing about law, lalalah, what's that?

2) The graduation ceremony is coming up, too. I'm going, though part of me goes, eh, my excitement about that came and went last year.

3) I would catch up on the World Cup too, 'cept for the unfriendly time zone thing - am not inclined to wake up at 3am for games, though I might do it for the final.

4) Also there's something poignant about the fact that at the last World Cup, when I had the leisure to watch games, law school wasn't even a gleam in my eye.

5) I would totally watch How to Train Your Dragon 2 again. In 3D. If only Transformers 4 hadn't taken over every single screen in the theatres in town. Damn it.

6) I've forgotten how to write fic.

7) There's still knitting.

Have been thinking about this post, and comments therein. My conclusion: either I'm a total lightweight and that there are some uber-sewing skills that I've never learnt and which apparently takes lots of time to master, or that I'm an arrogant jerk in thinking that simple (I emphasise simple) sewing skills isn't that hard to learn provided you are interested and have reasonable motor skills (and time and money for equipment and such).

Internship finally, finally ended, and I:

1) slept a lot;
2) cleared desk of year-old correspondence that I'd always meant to get to;
3) went to the gym; and
4) watched Red 2. I was mainly there for Lee Byun Hun, though Helen Mirren was enjoyable too. The plot's not supposed to make sense in these kinds of movies, so I didn't pay much attention to it, just sat back and watched one set-piece of action and banter after another.
