Caught in a Thousand Strings, Hikago, AU, WIP, by Thai_Tea_Addict. I'm over the moon at finding good, long fics, especially when it's Hikago. It's WIP, but at over 200,000 words, there's enough for a satisfying read, with the anticipation of more to come. Please heed the warnings for child prostitution. It's a definite AU but the characters are strongly drawn, and as distinctive as in canon. I was struck by how likeable Ogata is - in canon I didn't care for him much, but here he's somehow more compelling. Sai is impressive, and Hikaru... oh, Hikaru.

Blind Go, round 18: the fics are here.

Not many fics this round. A far cry from previous rounds, which is a bit sad. But that's the nature of fandom, I suppose.

Thoughts:

1. Someone commented the other day, when I said I was going to write for BG, that I ought to write more than just Hikago fic. Yeah, it's something to keep in mind, though I have written for a few (very few) other fandoms. My fic output has fallen drastically since the fervency of those Hikago days, but I doubt if I'll ever stop writing: there are still times when I simply feel the urge to write, and then I scribble some. I suppose it's rather lazy, waiting for inspiration rather than working at it, but I never pretended to be anything more than a hobbyist writer. ^__^

2. At the risk of sounding self-serving, I've decided that I ought to post my recent Hikago fics on AO3, as a matter of online record if nothing else. While writing for BG, I looked at my Hikago writing file and was a bit taken aback at how... unedited it was. My habit was/is to write, post (without even a beta) and then amend typos and phrasings as I went, working entirely on [edit post] versions. So my harddrive only has drafts and not the final versions... Yeah.

3. So, it's Hikago Day. I remember that I was starting to go off manga/anime at about the time I came across Hikago, but then I came across this scene: Read more... )

[personal profile] colorblue found Nirvana in Fire and I gushed about it at her post here. So much fun. I remember in one of the earlier episodes, one of the characters (Mengzhi) said to Mei Changsu, "You must have been through a lot (of suffering) to the extent that it changed the way you look now, to this." He meant it in a regretful way, and my id response was: "Wha.... he looks like Hu Ge now. There is no bad!"

Blind_Go id received for latest round. Now to write Hikago fic...

Tulli's Heian series, set in the Heian period, with the first part about Sai (and Hikaru) and the second about Hikaru seeking justice for Sai. Lovely long fic.

Stumbled on what looks like a trailer for Japanese subbed version of 琅琊榜. I love how the voiceover makes everything automatically 20x more dramatic.

Also this sweet fanvid of 琅琊榜". Looks pretty, hehe.

1. Really, JKR? The magic school in Japan is called 'magic-place'? And their robes turn white when they do black magic? Someone should tell the Sumeragi clan.

2. And we're into the 18th round of Blind Go, in time for Japan's Children Day, or Hikago Day 5/5. I'm pimping it because I've signed up and want more people to write Hikago fic. ^_^

3. Alpha-Go v Lee Sedol. Lee lost the 2nd game too. We live in interesting times.

Had some time and crossposted some of my old fics to AO3 account.

I also added a new fic I wrote for the most recent round of Blind_Go, Attention to Go Players, which had a genderswap theme.

I hadn't done Blind_Go in ages, and I was about to give this round a pass too, only I went to bed thinking "ok, which genderswapped character would I like to write about?" and woke up with "!!!" Somehow my subconscious had dreamt up an entire scenario for me, and my main exertion was writing it out.Read more... )

Non-fic:

How to view side-by-side apps in Windows 8.1. Hidden Manual indeed. Well, I knew it could be done, but it wasn't a compelling factor to find out how, until recently. Useful to know.

After I got my Surface last year, I used it more in the nature of a toy - after all, it had very few apps that made tablets fun - and for playing video clips, especially after my laptop became wonkier (something with the video card). Began to rely on it more when I did my training stint, and now carry it everywhere (well. It is a bit weighty.) just because there're so many documents on it now. I guess it's quite functional, though I've heard that many people who got the Surface have given it up in frustration because reasons. *shrugs* I'm ok with it, would be happy to get the next version. Now if only it will connect to my printer.

That thing where you wish fanfic-land were like life

I wish, like fanon Sherlock, that life is not a series of situations where I have to keep repeating myself. (Does that happen in canon? I only remember loads of fics were Sherlock supposedly hates repeating himself to mere mortals.) I also get annoyed when other people repeat themselves, especially when I have to sit there and not point this out.

(My annoyance scale runs concurrently with my 'bored-now!' scale, which are both trigger sensitive.)

I'm trying to counsel a friend and I've been repeating myself because friend is troubled. And in trouble. But stubborn. I don't like repeating myself... *whines*

Personal updates:

1) I finished the mandatory training period last week and (other than catching up on sleep and desk-clearing) I'm a bit at loose ends. At some point I should really go back and hit the books in preparation for the course leading up to the bar exams, which starts in (the course, that is), oh, two more weeks - but right now I'm enjoying the break and pretending I know nothing about law, lalalah, what's that?

2) The graduation ceremony is coming up, too. I'm going, though part of me goes, eh, my excitement about that came and went last year.

3) I would catch up on the World Cup too, 'cept for the unfriendly time zone thing - am not inclined to wake up at 3am for games, though I might do it for the final.

4) Also there's something poignant about the fact that at the last World Cup, when I had the leisure to watch games, law school wasn't even a gleam in my eye.

5) I would totally watch How to Train Your Dragon 2 again. In 3D. If only Transformers 4 hadn't taken over every single screen in the theatres in town. Damn it.

6) I've forgotten how to write fic.

7) There's still knitting.

Anyone who feels like it should post their ten most CRUCIAL CRUCIAL CRUCIAL-ASS movies, like the movies that explain everything about yourselves in your current incarnations (not necessarily your ten favorite movies but the ten movies that you, as a person existing currently, feel would help people get to know you) (they can change later on obviously).

In no particular order:

1) Labyrinth
2) A Chinese Odyssey Part 1: Pandora's Box and Part 2: Cinderella, the 1995 Stephen Chow adaptation/re-imagining of Journey to the West. Cracky as hell, and the last time Stephen Chow had an original idea. This should probably count as two movies?
3) Ringu. This is purely here to explain why I dislike mirrors. Also, how I should never watch horror movies.
4) Wu Yen. If I were any sort of normal Anita Mui fan I'd name Rouge, but I have an unbearable weakness for slapstick comedy and it isn't, mind, just anyone who can cross-dress as fantastically as Anita Mui did in this.
5) 2046. Sequel, of sorts, to In the Mood for Love. Think Cloud Atlas was good? Pft.
6) Infernal Affairs 1-3 (Yes, I'm cheating)
7) Hu Du Men. Because Josephine Siao.
8) Princess Mononoke
9) My Lucky Star. Because Tony Leung.
10) How to Train a Dragon

This list obviously says a lot about the type of Hong Kong movies I like and how few Western movies I've watched or feel strongly about. Honourable mentions: The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, the first 10 Stephen Chow movies. Also, how much do I love Tony Leung? A lot.

Just for the record, I really do loathe Powerpoint. Yes, it can be somewhat amusing to think of what other cryptic thing to put on my slides, but I had a lot of fun doing the laundry, too.

I'm expecting to be very busy when school starts. Which is in two weeks. And yet here I am, signing up for a fic thingy. Well, well, well!

Theme of "salty":

A Hand of Stone, crossover with Mushishi, by [Kakari]. Loved this so much - even though I only know the barest bit of Mushishi. But there's something about this fic... 'magical' isn't exactly it, but something like a fantasy etched in stone.

I sound fanciful, don't I? But it's a very good fic.

Hikago Team Deathmatch submissions up! The theme for round 1 is 'bitter'.

Lots of lovely fics to read! Really enjoyed Dark Roast, Kishimoto, by [Fido].

What gave me trouble in voting was the fact that these two fics are up against each other, and both are excellent:

Uttegaeshi, Hikaru/Ko Yeongha, by [Uchida]

vs

The Apple and the Tree, Ogata, Hikaru (background Hikaru/Akira) OCs, by [Kyuba]

Tough choice. I'll be here pondering.

Busy week of triple assignments is finally over. But exams loom...

Still, I've belatedly realised that Blind_Go #13 is up!. sign up by 30 March. Minimum word count 3,500 Theme: memories. Fics due 11.55pm of May 4th. I'm not sure whether to sign up as I'm so busy. Will think on it. But for anyone who loves Hikago, it would be a good opportunity to write fic for it. Go and have fun! ^_^

Fandom being what it is - for better or worse - you find yourself looking for How to Train Your Dragon (Movie) fics while praying that you won't find yourself reading any Hiccup/Toothless fic of any rating. I really, really wanted gen fic. Adventure fic. That's why Sometimes You Should Listen to the Romans is really cute.

So I woke up to 阳关三叠, from one of our CDs, played by my dad as a way of being Chinese-y without resorting to the usual barrage of Chinese New Year songs.

Lunar New Year has come early and took me a bit unprepared. Usually there's a bit of a longer lead-time from Jan 1. But it's supposed to especially auspicious this year as it is the year of the dragon. Ironically, this year bodes ill for those born in the year of the dragon as they are supposed to have offended the god of Jupiter (太歲) - so the astrological section says - by their very existence this year. Well, well.

Happy New Year anyway!
