Word of Honor (it actually hurts a bit to type 'honor' but that's the title *shrug*)":

Brain still eaten by Word of Honor. I should re-read the novel, I think? Speed-read it the first time round, I'm probably missing a lot, haha. That said, what shall I watch now that Word of Honor has ended and I've already re-watched it (some episodes) twice? I guess it'll become one of those comfort re-watch things, like I do with Untamed or Hospital Playlist. Or Pokémon, I suppose. Once in a while I'll put on a couple of episodes of Pokémon; it's wonderfully distracting and yet focuses your mind, like having a good idea while you're in the shower.

Also I finally dug out my old CD-player (placed aside in the last move) and now I'm playing old Jackie Cheung Cantonese hits. And Jay Chou. Omg I did not realise I still have the CDs. So lovely especially late at night.

And Youn Yuh-Jung won an Oscar!!! I know, I probably should give a shoutout as well to Chloe Zhao (congrats to her) but I haven't watched Nomadland yet (nor have I watched Minari, waiting for it to come to Netflix) but I've liked Yuon Yuh-Jung in every K-drama and variety show I've seen her in, so congrats!

WoH fics:

winter thunder, snow in summer, what happened in episode 36, Wen Kexing/Zhou Zishu, dual cultivation, explicit, by scheherazade and the sequel, not yet home

We Would Choose This Tenderness, WKX/ZZS, Word of Honor, by Zelos

And by way of some self-advertising: Yes, it's us, a drabble-ly crossover of Untamed and WoH, by yours truly.

Wen Kexing/Zhou Zishu:

the annals of history, now dust, ending spoiler, Word of Honor by sundermount

The Viscera of Our Souls, by Zelos. Also by same author: And We Shall Toast the Heavens

Just one thing: I see authors apologising for making WKX the top and I'm... ?_? I had the impression that if anything the author meant for WKX to be the top and ANYWAY what does it really matter and does it need apologising for? So, mildly perplexed.

I think maybe (just off the top of my head) that it's the difference between how Chinese (and haphazardly lumping them with Asian) fans decide who's the top and how non-Chinese (ditto) fans do so? (I remember a number of similar debates in Japanese fandoms.) Or perhaps Chinese fans simply go with what Priest states (while recognising that they probably switch). I dunno. I've been watching too many fan-made reactions by Chinese fans that simply assume WKX is the top so *shrug*.

My thoughts on how TV characters might be for top/bottom dynamics: WKX is taller, more shameless, manic, feral, the avenger, better kungfu, versus ZZS who is older, rolls his eyes disdainfully, suffers prettily, the one who is guilt-stricken, the one who adopts the kid first and is a hugger. *shrugs* Any assumptions would collapse once we brought up other characteristics like how ZZS is the leader of a sekrit assassination organisation and stuck nails into himself while WKX twirls a fan and has magical red eyeshadow and provides for his family. ZZS has better hair, though. <3

As for dynamics: Whatever works for the story.

Watching lots of Word of Honor fan-reaction vids, so much so that I had to take a break and re-watch The Untamed, haha.

Also I belatedly realised Zhang Zhehan was young!Lin Shu in Nirvana in Fire and now I love him unreservedly.

So, Word of Honor has ended. >_<

1. To be frank, I couldn't finish watching the first time round because we came to Gu Xiang and Cao Weining's wedding, and despite knowing the novel's ending, I had to stop because I couldn't bear it.

2. I'm happy that that Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu got their happy ending, but frankly, I didn't like the ending that much; it felt a bit deux ex machina to me. It didn't feel right they're stuck on top of a mountain forever. The novel is called the Wanderers, and I'd always thought that they'd go wandering around jianghu later. *makes complicated face* Of course, the title could also refer only to their wanderings in the series/in the novel. But I love the thought of these two experienced jianghu veterans going around intimidating the hell out of everyone else.

3. Those red robes, though... I can watch WKX twirl in them forever. And the scene with that hair-combing and hairpin (hair stick?): Whoa.

Haha. No, just a note that my brain outside of work has been consumed by Word of Honor and 《天涯客》. Just as well, because RL is pretty much wringing me out and I feel if I weren't fangirling WoH, I'd be banging my head against the wall.

On that note, though:

(1) The version of Wen Kexing in the novel is a bit more dark-edged.
(2) There's way more flirting and even a stolen kiss here and there.
(3) Priest's writing style is quite clean, occasionally reminds me of Gu Lung, and has a few poetic moments, which are lovely.

I need sleep.

Also I can't stop listening to this end theme song for 錦心似玉, Sword and Brocade. Lost interest in the drama after episode 15 or so, but love the song.

I haven't watched HiStory4 yet... apparently some love it and some hate it? It seemed very tropey but I was hoping they could do something interesting with those tropes. I've always enjoyed the HiStory series. (Has everyone watched Trapped yet? They must.) I'll catch up over the weekend, or when I finish《天涯客》.

So who signed up to read Priest's 天涯客? Me. Okay, I'm still figuring out the ins and outs of the website (http://www.jjwxc.net/oneauthor.php?authorid=145956) and I really, really find it annoying to read novels on my screen and/or phone and my eyes don't thank me. (If a fanfic gets long I save it to my kindle.) But I guess it's bearable. Priest's writing style is pretty solid so I'll go with it for now. The novel was finished in 2010 (I think) and has been translated; those who are interested, google is your friend.

As for the C-drama, am I the only one who notice the numerous scenes that all take place under a full moon? *g* I think they pointed out that the show had a very small budget, and many of the sets are repeated, and it's cheaper to film by the riverside... >_>;;; But it doesn't matter all that much in the overall scale of things - look, the 1980-1990s HK wuxia were rather... budget-constrained too but some of the best shows came out. So a good story, good pacing and acting, and character development are all the big things that the audience takes away.

Someone (yes, I'm watching a lot of China-based commentary on the series) highlighted a lot of meaningful details that are included, e.g. the various little moments that show Zhou Zishi is gradually losing his senses of taste and hearing: he eats less, and when Wen Kexing approaches, he doesn't respond until WKX is directly in front of him. It's pretty heartbreaking to watch. I'm told Gu Xiang's romance will end badly, and I'm not looking forward to that. But the m/m relationship is still going on strong. <3
