(A) Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: I'm still trying to make up my mind whether it should be canon or very, very influential fanon. Or outright fanfic. I can see that it'd be exciting if I were watching the staged version, but I'm also wondering if the numerous very short scenes wouldn't seem rather choppy. Now, question of the hour: spoilery? )

(B) River of Stars, Saiyuki/Stargate SG-1 crossover, AU for Saiyuki, WIP, by Vathara. Yes, that's Vathara of Upon a Fiery Steed (at ff.net), the Gundam Wing/Stargate crossover, who I go back to again and again even though her Duo has rather fanon-ish than I would usually like and that goes for her Heero, her Wufei... but it's still addictive. Then there's Spin Cycle a Ruronin Kenshin/Stargate crossover and its somewhat sequels. Yes, she has a trend going for her. Actually I just like all of her crossover fics. And of course, who doesn't love Saiyuki?

Meme, stolen from f-list:

Rules: go to page 7* of your WIP, skip to the 7th line, share 7 sentences, and tag 7 more writers to continue the challenge.

Most of the businesses were held by a number of proxies, but eventually Takaba noticed that a name cropped up with regularity.

Sandaime.

Strictly speaking, it was not a name at all. It was just a title that meant "Third generation head". Head of the organisation, Takaba speculated. But what organisation?

Takaba was about to give up when he found an old news archive of a now-defunct newsmagazine (it had been bought out by a bigger, more monied media company and then put to sleep, metaphorically speaking).

Actually page 7 of my working draft. Not going to tag, feel free to steal meme too!

I read Cold Days by Jim Butcher and it was not awful. Either that or enough time away from reading his books have lowered my expectations enough to make it easier to bear with Harry Dresden's brand of describing women who were not for him, by gosh look at that body!, but no thanks, m'am, you're too sexy/scary/innocent. spoiler? I went to donate blood today and it was a success! Well, I'm perhaps more gleeful than I should be, because it's the first time in years that my iron levels were high enough for me to do so. I'd always heard that you could get a wide variety of stuff from Chinese shopping websites, but I've never taken the time to check them out before. And now I have, and it's hilariful like whoa.

The souvenirs you wanted to buy in China but didn't actually find in touristy shops:

Embroidery kits (what? I'd always wanted to learn to do Chinese embroidery - apparently they provide you real silk thread which is hard to come by where I am). Also embroidery paraphernalia.

Mink yarn.

Erhu... except I imagine it'd be a bit tough to get through customs due to the need to verify that the python skin used is from a sustainable source/not prohibited for import/any other reason.

Ooh, I've always wanted a jinghu!

Except if you go down the slippery slope of checking out musical instruments, what's to stop you from wanting to buy a

Books:

I've just finished reading Sleeping Murder by Agatha Christie. It's really very much like a Gothic mystery, isn't it, even to the ominous portents and quote from a literary work? Except with more red herrings. Reminds me of early Barbara Michaels.

At the library, I spotted Recollections of Rosings by Rebecca Ann Collins, which, as far as I can tell, is Sense and Sensibility Pride and Prejudice fanfic, going all the way to The Next Generation. (There was a whole shelf of them at the library.) I'm not sure I'm entirely convinced that P&P fanfic can be kept up in that fashion. (Well. At least it's not Sense and Sensibility and Zombies.) This particular volume looks like it might invent a villainous backstory for Lady Catherine de Bourgh, so I picked it. ^_^

ETA for correcting P&P for S&S. My only excuse is I enjoyed S&S more?

[livejournal.com profile] ursulav launches Toad Words, her collection of fairytale re-tellings, in e-book fashion, under the name T. Kingfisher. (Hm, why did I keep typing Toad Woads?) I've read all but the new story before, of course, but it's nice to have them in one place instead of hunting them down, though it did take USD3.99 (or whatever is your local currency equivalent). Price's within the acceptable range for me. The new story, Boar & Apples, is an interesting take on the tale, but the plot was not as unexpected as I was hoping for (though the boar who is also an architect is awesome). Felt a little depressing here and there; I'm happier with the other tales.

Mainly I'm posting because I found myself writing this after reading Merlin fic and wondering how a domestic Merlin/Harry Potter crossover might work:

"-and there's a Harry, a Gandalf and a Merlin in our year."

"Don't talk with your mouth full," Merlin said, then his ears caught up. "Merlin? And I thought Lucy's year was bad." He rubbed the buzz-cut of his eldest daughter's teasingly - earning an annoyed "Dad!" - and revealed, "They've got a Gellert Grindelwald (yes, the whole thing) and an Albus."

"Grizzie's okay," Lucy said meditatively. "She thought about being a Dark witch in our second year, but gave that up to be a Beater."
