Earlier in May I caught Age of Ultron, which was good in parts and senseless in others, and people with stronger opinions than me have already stated them, so. I did like [livejournal.com profile] onyxhawke's review.

Caught Spy yesterday, which was a nice surprise as, for some reason I had been expecting a thriller, it was a comedy and was hilarious in parts. Melissa McCarthy was good, versatile and convincing and able to go with the rather meandering plot. I'd read prior reviews that pointed out that the fat jokes and gags were disagreeable, and yup, could have done without them, but there weren't as many as I feared. Jason Stantham was also a delight, and I really liked Miranda Hart, even with the boring tall person jokes. Not as much a spy spoof; I think they were trying to play it straight, despite the references to James Bond. Enjoyed the sight of CIA basement infested with rats and bats. Did not like McCarthy's incessant swearing and f-bombs, which lost the power to be amusing after the first five minutes and instead became something like white noise, only more tedious.

Books:

My Real Children by Jo Walton. I was at first confused that this was considered science fiction because it didn't reverberate with the usual science fiction themes such as aliens, time travel, etc, and then I stupidly and belatedly realised that not only were there obvious sf things like space exploration and colonies on the moon but also, the entire premise of this novel is sf because alternate history. And possible trousers of time, and what is real, anyway? And a glimpse at the slippages between time (and time streams), as experienced by the same person. Or is it two persons? It's such understated excellence, and Walton's craftsmanship is admirable.

Off topic, because of a reference that Patricia makes, I finally twigged: Charlotte Sometimes, by Penelope Farmer. I remember reading that book when I was young!

Bryony and Roses by [livejournal.com profile] ursulav, see also ebook launch, under the name T. Kingfisher. Re-telling of Beauty and the Beast story: it's enlivened by the heroine being a gardener, the beast being sarcastic, and an intensifying mystery about how the beast came to be.
