Sep. 26th, 2009 10:28 amYesterday evening was slightly surreal for the fact that I was at farewell party for my ex-boss (who's emigrating) and we ended up drinking with students who discussed such views as "Hatoyama is an alien" (I'm especially amused by this part) and "how do you play this drinking game again?" I'm sorely reminded of the reason why I haven't imbibed alcohol for years: I'm a total lightweight, and get a headache just from the fumes.

Something that might go to
fen_at_sea, but am not sure if it suits: Is Hokkien my mother tongue?, on the connection between Chinese languages and Malay, by Alfian Sa’at. I'm chagrined that I've never thought about the origins of the word 'durian' before in my life.

Bookblog of not-a-novel:
Title: Pattern Magic
Author: Nakamichi Tomoko 中道 友子
I obtained this book despite the fact that I feel sure I will never be tempted to make a dress with cube-like protrusions at the bodice. It's fun, though, and um... mind-expanding? Because my previous dress-making forays (such as they are from a near-decade ago) have been from pathetically simple patterns that anyone could draw on brown paper (kitchen paper? tracing paper?) or just those patterns you get from McCalls and the like. And this one shows how you're supposed to draw patterns if you've ever had the burning desire to um, make a skirt with a klein bottle-like sinkhole (what's the opposite of a protrusion?) feature--I thought it was a pocket at first--in it, and how to make a (deliberately) misfitting blouse by misaligning two halves of the pattern, and to make interesting drawstring holes appear at the sides and abdomen of your garment.
There are sane clothes, though. Love the blouse with interweaving strips at the bodice, which actually looks lovely, and the ones where the collar turns into a little bow at the neck.
The second book in the series, the one with accordian-like melon sleeves, looks fun, though.
Novel next time, really.
