I know what you mean about fan communities. Hikaru no Go and Prince of Tennis (and of course Harry Potter) were hugely enjoyable because there were loads of discussions, squeeing and sudden fic. Nowadays it seems like a lot of the reactionary and discussion posts are on Twitter and Tumblr, which I simply don't have the time for, so... >_>
