Summary: Caused by the change in child actors for A-Li between Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms and Eternal Love of Dream
A-Li woke up as a girl in Qingqiu.
She'd never done it before because she hadn't realised she could be more than the child of Prince Yehua and a mortal woman. Then A-Li found Mother, who was no mortal, and crucially, she met the High God Zhe Yan.
(Zhe Yan had transformed Mother into a man when she went to Kunlun.)
The tree spirit, Migu, found her a pretty yellow dress and did her hair. Mother was pleased that her magic was so advanced, and Father said she'd be perfect when she attended the wedding between him and Mother.

Summary: Modern-day incarnation, Tengshe
On a fine sunny day, a fireball landed in the courtyard of a house belonging to Chu Xuanji and Yu Sifeng (not their real names).
The fireball unfolded itself into a snake, but one with twelve-feet-long wings, which flapped once, twice, then:
A man with long golden hair caught up in a half-topknot and wearing a light blue suit shook himself upright, then strode to the front door and pounded on it.
Sifeng opened the door, said: "Yes, there's food," and Tengshe brightened, then entered only to be affectionately petted by Xuanji, whom he shook away, pretending offence and disdain.
Part II:
"But Sifeng, is Tengshe still my spiritual animal?" Xuanji asked over dessert.
His head weaving sideways, Tengshe bristled as much as a snake could bristle. "You stinky woman, how dare you?" he demanded.
"Our blood pact was made with my previous incarnation," Xuanji reminded him.
Sifeng said, "At that time, you were the God of War. You are the God of War still." He looked at Tengshe, who had scarfed down all the food on the table. "How did you think he found you?"
Xuanji blinked, then stretched out her palm. As they watched, a gold-coloured ball hissed into existence.
Part III:
"Fuck!" Tengshe looked as though he couldn't decide whether to be triumphant or resentful at the confirmation. The proof of their blood pact on Xuanji's palm mocked him.
Xuanji said, "Whatever happens, we’re friends."
Tengshe leant back, crossing his arms. "A spiritual animal doesn't get to be 'friends' with its master," he muttered, then frowned at them. "What?" he challenged.
Xuanji's eyes seemed to glaze over for a second. "Tengshe," she said, "you know that Luohou Jidu only said that to protect you. He didn't want you to risk your life."
"I don't care." But he let Xuanji pet him.
