Nearly forgot: International Flight Akira, Hikaru, others, Hikago, and Separation Anxiety, Tezuka, Yukimura, Prince of Tennis, by [livejournal.com profile] thephoenixboy

Geocities is closing down by this year. Well! On one hand I'd say it doesn't affect me much*, but on the other hand I feel a bit amazed that it's hung on for so long.

*Actually, I have a website there with my fics on it. Not sure what to do with them.(All my fics are already on LJ.) Post them on Dreamwidth as well? Wordpress? Ff.net? Ignore?

Finally after the usual process of procrastination, pre-ordered [livejournal.com profile] sarahtales's new book The Demon's Lexicon (and not at Amazon).

*wince* I've never really realised how much I recoil from book covers that contain an overwhelming representation of a human face. Don't much like photographs of a person's face on a book cover either. A three-quarter or full portrait, doable. But a big shiny face that sort of demands that I look at it (complete with shiny jewellery) - I don't like.

Ah well, it's not like I bought it for the cover.

Re-watching episodes of Prince of Tennis (up to games with Hyotei)

1) Bullying in Japanese schools is really blatant--or at least, the Japanese don't seem to have a problem portraying it in popular children's anime. I'm not sure this is a credit to production values, or a sign of its entrenchment in the education system.

2) Shiba is a very, very dumb reporter (and photographer) for sports. She keeps taking photos of the players after their magical tennis shots. And that 'Ryouma-sama' thing is pure embarrassment. (Fine for Tomoko, who is 12 years old, but her?...)

3) Oishi is dead popular with girls!

4) Nanjiroh is actually a pretty good father, for all his faults, not to mention that he's a father who spends time with his kid every day. Yet he doesn't hover and worry unnecessarily. I sort of recall a prevailing view a few years back that he was a lousy father for pushing Ryouma, but I don't really see it when I watch the anime now.

5) (Remembered this but needed re-confirmation) When Echizen first plays with Fuji, Momoshiro is the only one to put his money (not literally) on Echizen. Yay Echizen/Momo! I love the good vibes between them.

6) Echizen is either super-emotionally mature or really obtuse, or just stubbornly, stupidly focused on tennis.

7) Back when I first watched the Atobe-Tezuka match, I thought Tezuka was really silly to keep playing at the risk of damaging his arm. Now I realise his persistence is just part of his attitude towards tennis. There's something admirable about it. (I still go, "WHY?!" but yeah, it's part of him.)

8) I didn't imagine it. Atobe IS dead sexy. Arrogant as hell, but...

9) In some ways, Inui's interest in Kaidou is even more blatant than any of the other pairings.

10) Fuji ignoring Mizuki will never not be funny.

11) I wonder how old Ryuuzaki is, to have a 12-year-old granddaughter. This means that likely, at the time she was Nanjiroh's coach, she was already the mother of a boy around Nanjiroh's age. Which in itself is worth remarking upon, seeing that in Japan, not many women work after marriage or having children (situation may be different in sports coaching?)

12) Kirihara was a lot more interesting the first time round.

4) Contrasting Nanjiroh with Hikaru's dad, or even Hikaru's mum is interesting. He's there, he spends time with Ryoma, he understands his problems, even when he doesn't do much about them. It's as though he wants to be a good dad while maintaining his macho credibility or something equally inane. I think that's how I try and write him, anyway.

6) I vote for stupidly focussed on tennis

7) Tezuka works a lot better as a samurai than as a tennis player, sometimes. It really is the sort of play that makes you believe that the entire junior high circuit is after him. The Atobe-Tezuka match seems to get more incredible each time I watch it.

8) He's grown on me. I think I'm agreeing.
