So I woke up to 阳关三叠, from one of our CDs, played by my dad as a way of being Chinese-y without resorting to the usual barrage of Chinese New Year songs.

Lunar New Year has come early and took me a bit unprepared. Usually there's a bit of a longer lead-time from Jan 1. But it's supposed to especially auspicious this year as it is the year of the dragon. Ironically, this year bodes ill for those born in the year of the dragon as they are supposed to have offended the god of Jupiter (太歲) - so the astrological section says - by their very existence this year. Well, well.

Happy New Year anyway!

I dunno if I should regret starting to watch 步步惊心, because it ate up my prep time for school. Basically, it was one of the hottest dramas out of China last year (or the year before that? can't recall) and the plot mainly centres around a contemporary woman who wakes up in the body of a 16-year-old girl named Ruoxi in a noble family during the reign of Emperor Kangxi. The squee part is where she basically makes friends with a number of the princes who were at that time fighting to become heir to the throne and erm, dates them. Seeing the power struggle from her perspective makes the history (not to mention historicist) geek in me happy. You're outside and inside at the same time!

But one of the things I really like about it (even tho it makes for melancholy viewing) is how, even tho it's basically "modern girl travels to the past", she doesn't actually change history or make predictions that would cause her to be regarded as a madwoman. She basically keeps mum, and adapts. It makes an important point about how the social-cultural conditions of the period can overwhelm you and change you after you've been there a while, and you end up doing things you never thought you could.

Also, it's awful to be a woman about, say, 300 years ago. Even you're a member of the nobility, with presumably no worries about food and shelter. And on a whimisical note and perhaps TMI, but one of the things that I've always, always deplored about the thought of travelling to the past as a woman is the lack of sanitary napkins, or whatever they are called in your part of the world.

I think I can deal with the lack of toothpaste and toothbrushes (...wait. I can't.) and lack of painkillers in tablet form but the monthly thing is just... no.
