Feb. 23rd, 2013 01:21 amI have had... hm, I wouldn't call it the week from hell, though it's certainly been a very busy week with a lot more deliverables than I would have preferred. And afterwards I (finally) watched Life of Pi. I didn't expect it to be still in the theatres. It was amazing. ETA: Visually, I mean. I'm such a sucker for star-filled vistas. Stars! It's beautiful enough that I could watch it again. For hours. The tiger was awesome. So, weirdly enough, were the flying fish. And the whale. The cannibalistic island was creepy but I think I've seen the concept done elsewhere.
The plot... there was a plot? I was very underwhelmed. I haven't read the book, so I can't really tell whether the failing was due to the movie or the book. When the book first came out I was moderately "um, no, gimme Sense and Sensibility". Don't think I'll be seeking the book out.
To be frank, the religiosity in the movie made me wince. I do. Not. Like it. When people mash religious together and tell me it's one grand plan of the universe. Or some message like that. And really, what did Pi find out about the universe that any other shipwrecked sailor wouldn't have found out? Is it trite that I expect anyone who is driven to the extremes, to be forced to fight for survival, would come to realisations about life, the universe and your place in the world? The themes of Life of Pi are universal, but the exploration's superficial, and that's about as satisfying as eating carob.
I couldn't care less about whether Pi was telling the truth or not at the end. (I was also uninterested in the ending of Inception. It's just me. I don't like fake-intellectual puzzles.)
It's beautiful, though. Did I say that? I'm glad I watched it on the big screen (tho' not the 3d version, too bad).
