Why does lightning come before thunder?
(No, it's not because... whatever you're thinking of.)
Once upon a time, it was common for the Jade Empeor to punish miscreants by striking them dead with, erm, electricity from the sky. This was carried out bya flunky an old (I guess he just looked old, since he didn't age) male immortal with the imaginative title of Thunder God (or Deity, if you prefer).
However, old age and eyesight being what they are in those days before modern eye surgery, the Thunder God occasionally zapped the wrong person. Loved ones of the zapped therefore appealed to the Jade Emperor for mercy and of course, the Jade Emperor summoned the Thunder Deity for an explanation.
TD: Look, it's not my fault he was standing next to the sinful. My eyes aren't what they used to be.
JE: ...
TD: Besides, y'know, each time I make my entrance, I'm surrounded by dark clouds, blocking out the light. It's really difficult to identify the right - or in this case, the wrong person.
JE: Ok, I'll give you a light. *summons Lightning Deity* (who in some stories is an old woman). No more mistakes. Play nicely, kids!
And that is why lightning comes before thunder.
