I was going to post more regularly, really. That can be my new year resolution for the year of the Dog.
Well, today is the 7th day of Lunar New Year, also known as 人日, the day when human beings were created (chickens were created first) by 女媧. So today is the birthday of every human. Yay! (I guess the goddess did have to practice on chickens first.)
More randomly:
1. I have been working at my current place for almost exactly a year. (Joined in late February last year.) It was not exactly an expected development in my career, but to be frank I'm still a tiny bit jittery at the thought of being jobless (again) so, fine, I can't complain. Really. The fact of being employed being one thing, the work is also pretty engaging, pay is all right, my supervisors are good, hardly any personality clashes in the entire office and working hours are pretty sane.
2. In this year, my flat finally comes! Or so they tell me. I applied for a government-subsidised flat (subsidised! My tax dollars at work!) three years ago and they work on this annoying system where they only start construction after they have enough subscribers/buyers. Which is fine in one instance (subsidised! Though given the way the property market have shot up, the price is still pretty enraging). It is scheduled to come online this year and I'm looking forward to it like whoa. I would be counting down if I could. ^___^
3. Discovered K-drama while unemployedlast year before last and have actually been watching regularly rather than only catching random episodes on TV. Currently watching Hwayugi, a modern re-interpretation of Journey to the West where there is a romance (it would not be a K-drama without a romance) but liking it so far. Helps that I like all the actors, especially the leads. Previous fangirling of Goblin still existent, as evidenced by how pissed off I feel when someone professes antipathy for it solely (or nearly) based on the fact the female lead was a high school student (on the way to graduation) and the male lead is 939 years old. I mean, I see the problem here too, but in one sense it doesn't bother me as much. The way the story is set up, there is no way that there wasn't going to be a problem with power dynamics given that it's a romance between a human female and a minor god.
So, to be frank I'd rather enjoy the utter ridiculousness of Ji Eun-tak actually falling in love with Kim Shin. I mean, in Goblin-verse, she's the only one who sees the sword. Everyone else is probably thinking, "tall, rich guy with mysterious magic powers". She's thinking, "Hello, he's got a sword stuck in his chest." The fact that she's a high-school student and has less power, less money, doesn't own a house and has to move in with him - all these things pale in comparison with the realisation that every time she looks at him, she sees a freaking big glowing sword. If she can fall in love despite that, more power to her.
Ok, rant over. I'll just enjoy what I enjoy.
3. Last year, I was working part-time as a writing instructor to 7- and 8-year-olds in a private tuition centre. Yeah, it sounds really weird, and possibly a little sadistic. I can't imagine my 7-year-old self being told to sit down and taught to plan to compose a story/exposition piece. There was some spoonfeeding, but most small kids are pretty malleable, and those who are not are competitive, so they got down to it after some nagging and strategic peer pressure. I was only teaching on Saturday, and the workload got rather heavy by the end of the year. Then the tuition centre informed me that they were not renewing my contract for the new year (2018), which was sad but also a relief. So now my Saturdays are my own again. A bit bewildering. (Also loss of income, >_< )
