Apparently the pairing name for Q/Bond is 00Q, which reminds of that drink named Qoo. I prefer not to take James Bond movies seriously (and switching off whenever James Bond has any sort of onscreen interaction with a woman who is neither M nor Michelle Yeoh), so I've been having fun with:

A pox on all your machines, Q/Bond, Skyfall, by scioscribe

The sheer lack of professionalism, same pairing, same author.

Copy of Captain Vorpatril's Alliance came in the mail a couple of days ago. Finished it yesterday.

The marriage of convenience plot wherein the two parties fall in love... argh. Then comes the crazy in-laws... double argh. I cannot take seriously the idea of underground treasure, especially when it's under Cockroach Central, even though:

1) Nice ref to to King Tut's tomb (though really in the book it was just a bunch of collected lootings, very valuable but morally displeasing)
2) The word-picture of Cockroach Central sinking underground was so beautiful that I started laughing.

Also, Gregor was awesome. And I wondered a bit if Duv Galeni was going to resign and go back to academia... probably not.

Damnit, I've been spoilt by Hollywood-style reconciliation scenes. I totally wanted a manly, family scene between Ivan and Illyan, and it was denied.

Tej was... a non-entity? We're supposed to like her, I guess, as the only non-power-grubbing child that grew up in a nest of vipers, but nope, can't really see her as a real person. And what was that thing about her being totally 100% natural while her siblings aren't? So genetic modification makes you yucky, is it?

Shiv - don't quite like him, but have to admire his survival instincts.

I cannot like Grandmama, even though some might describe her as ass-kicking (do they? Will they?). She's a money-grubbing, grudge-bearing, see-people-as-things so-and-so.

The Baronne, though, is fascinating. She doesn't seem to be as active, but she knows what she's dealing with. I wish there was more of her rather than her mother.

The rest of the clan is repulsive, or perhaps they're meant to be seen in that way, y'know, the way organized crime families are.

What is this crap about blue-skinned people? (I cannot take the bookjacket seriously.) Was there an Avatar-fanclub on Jackson's Whole? The idea of the 'jeeves' makes me wince. And what are 'loyalty' treatments? Is that like a membership to Ikea?

Maybe it's meant to show that Jackson's Whole is an awful nightmare of a place, but eh, Mirror Dance already did that. And if it's meant to show that Jackson's Whole ISN'T a horrible place, sorry, the Jewels don't help.

I wish Rish did more than just pine after her siblings and have sex with Byerly; she seemed to be a fusion of babysitter and spy and nothing more.

Ivan... was interesting. This book is his, but except for the ho-hum insight about how marriage isn't as bad as he had always thought, most of the time he was just moving along, doing his thing. And miraculously unaffected by his claustrophobia. I haven't been exactly surprised by him, and that's not what I'd have expected in this book. Byerly: I was never very interested in his character until this book, and damn, now I want to read more about how he started working for ImpSec.
